Common Ground Museum is Smaller Architects’ 2017 competition proposal for an art complex in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. It begins with the belief that art becomes more meaningful when woven into everyday life. Rather than a destination visited only for exhibitions, the museum is envisioned as a public space where people can enter freely, rest, and encounter art. Four platforms extend the building’s roofs along the slope, serving as museum roofs, urban parkland, and paths connecting different levels while restoring the damaged terrain.

Situated between the city and a mountain, the building settles into the landscape rather than asserting an independent form. Transparent glass façades soften the boundary between the museum and its surroundings. Visitors look out toward the city and nature, while the museum’s activities and artworks become visible from outside. The surrounding landscape becomes part of the museum, just as art becomes part of the city.

The site’s approximately 20-meter difference in elevation guides the spatial organization. Instead of flattening the slope, the building follows the terrain through a stepped arrangement. Inside, changing levels form a continuous open space accessible from different directions and elevations. A waffle roof structure is proposed to minimize columns, allowing a flexible floor plan and maintaining continuity throughout the interior.

Four sites separated by roads accommodate distinct programs: an entrance square, a café and bookstore, an education building for local residents, and the museum itself. The café and bookstore can operate independently, remaining available when the museum is closed. Together, these spaces create a cultural complex where rest, reading, learning, and exhibitions become part of everyday public life.
