인하대학교 건축학과 및 대학원을 졸업하고, 프랑스 École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Val de Seine에서 교환학생으로 수학하였다. 이후 ‘장 푸르베 & 김중업 건축장학생(Jean Prouvé & Joong-up Kim Fellowship)’으로 선발되었으며, 바우건축과 정림건축에서 실무 경험을 쌓았다. 현재 Smaller Architecture Office를 운영하며 작지만 더 나은 공간을 만드는 데 집중하고 있다. 협소주택 ‘세로로’ 프로젝트로 서울시 건축상 우수상을 수상하였으며, 현재 인하대학교 겸임교수로 재직 중이다.

Designing Together

스몰러건축은 건축주와 함께 고민하는 설계 과정을 중요하게 생각한다. 복잡한 절차와 제한된 조건, 작은 예산 속에서 건축주가 겪는 부담과 현실을 이해하고, 그 안에서 가능한 최선의 선택을 함께 찾아간다. 공간이 완성된 이후의 일상과 삶의 변화를 먼저 상상하며, 건축이 삶의 배경으로 오래 작동하기를 바란다.

Small, but Better

스몰러건축이 지향하는 ‘작지만 더 나은 공간’에서 ‘작다’는 단순히 규모의 문제가 아니다. 사회적 관심 밖에서 방치된 공간, 건축적 논의에서 쉽게 제외되어 온 조건들까지 포함한다. 때로는 도시에서 쓸모를 잃은 재료와 사물을 다시 사용하는 일이기도 하고, 너무 작은 예산 탓에 개선조차 시도되지 못했던 상황이기도 하다. 스몰러건축은 이러한 주변부의 조건들에 주의를 기울이며, 작지만 분명한 변화의 가능성을 건축으로 풀어내고자 한다.

Graduated from the Department of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture at Inha University, and studied as an exchange student at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Val de Seine in France. He was selected as a recipient of the Jean Prouvé & Joong-up Kim Fellowship and gained professional experience at BAU Architects and Junglim Architecture. He currently runs Smaller Architecture Office, focusing on creating smaller but better spaces. He received the Seoul Architecture Award (Excellence Award) for the Tiny House: Seroro project and is currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at Inha University.

We explore the potential of small-scale architecture to create meaningful spaces. Rooted in the philosophy that ‘Smaller’ can be ‘Better,’ we pursue designs that are efficient, adaptable, and deeply connected to their surroundings. Based in Seoul, we work on compact housing, small urban plots, and innovative remodeling projects. Constraints are treated as creative opportunities, and architecture is approached as an ongoing dialogue between space, structure, and human experience.
